Secretary of Adult Correction Todd Ishee has named Sammy Heaton as the warden of Brown Creek Correctional Institution.

Heaton previously served as associate warden for custody and operations at Southern Correctional Institution in Troy.

"Warden Heaton brings more than 25 years of experience to the position, much of that at Brown Creek where he started as a correctional officer," Ishee said.

Brown Creek Correctional Institution is being re-established as a standalone institution housing male offenders in minimum custody. It had been consolidated with neighboring Anson Correctional Institution since 2009. Managing Anson's female population and Brown Creek's male population as separate institutions will provide for added safety and oversight in prison operations.

Heaton began his career at Brown Creek in 1998, advancing through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant and captain before transferring to Southern Correctional in 2017 as a training specialist. He became a security compliance auditor in 2021 and served as a facility compliance specialist at Southern and Sanford Correctional before being named associate warden at Southern in 2022.

Heaton earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from UNC Pembroke. He holds an Advanced Training Certificate from the N.C. Criminal Justice and Training Commission and is a certified Master Trainer in control, restraints and defensive techniques.
