On August 22, 2024, troopers from SP Horseheads responded to Planet Fitness at 3300 Chambers Road in the town of Big Flats for an active disturbance.

Subsequent to an investigation, it was determined that while the victim was walking into Planet Fitness, a male subject started to chase after her. The victim ran into Planet Fitness and hid behind the counter as the male subject continued to pursue her. Employees of the business intervened and protected the victim from the male subject. The male subject then fled the scene and was later located exiting the Arnot Mall.

David Ruppel, age 64, of Alpine, NY, was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to SP Horseheads for processing. Ruppel was charged with Menacing 3rd (B Misdemeanor). Ruppel was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Big Flats Court on September 5, 2024, at 6:00 p.m.
