Today, Congresswomen Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-03), and Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) led seven House members in sending a letter to Congressional leadership urging them to pass the National Landslide Preparedness Act Reauthorization Act (H.R. 7003) before the end of the year.
Following the 2014 Oso tragedy, DelBene authored and shepherded passage of the National Landslide Preparedness Act. The law expired in September, cutting off critical programs and funding that protect lives and communities from landslide risks. Earlier this year, this bipartisan and bicameral bill overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives as part of the Weather Act reauthorization bill.
"Each of these provisions has been instrumental to improving our understanding of landslide risks and hazards. We have a responsibility to ensure the next natural disaster does not become a national tragedy. We urge you to ensure passage of the National Landslide Preparedness Act Reauthorization Act and/or the Weather Act Reauthorization Act before the end of the year," the lawmakers wrote.
In September 2024, the U.S. Geological Survey announced the first tranche of funding from the law, totaling nearly $1 million. These funds are boosting landslide preparedness and research efforts in Washington and across the country.
