171 pets from the Animal Shelter find new homes during Clear the Shelters

During national Clear the Shelters month from Aug. 10 to Sept. 10, the Mesquite Animal Shelter placed 171 pets in new homes - an almost 60% increase from last year.

"About 300 people came out for our Clear the Shelters event on Sept. 7," said Hugo Espinoza, Animal Services Manager. "There was such positive energy. It was exciting to see so many wonderful pets find forever homes."

More than 40 animals found homes this year at the Shelter's special one-day adoption event on Sept. 7. Last year, the Shelter placed 107 pets during Clear the Shelters month.

Returning for its 10th year, Clear the Shelters was started in 2015 by NBCUniversal Local and is now cohosted with Telemundo. The nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign has helped more than 1.1 million pets find new homes across the country.

Last year through Clear the Shelters, more than 1,400 shelters and rescues placed more than 157,000 pets and raised more than $575,000. So far for the 2024 campaign, an estimated 95,000 adoptions have been recorded. The deadline to make financial donations to Clear the Shelters has been extended to Sept. 30.
