RSU Communications Students Win Oklahoma Speech Theatre Communication Association Award

Two Rogers State University communications students recently received recognition at the Oklahoma Speech Theatre Communication Association (OSTCA) fall 2024 conference.

Junior Skylar Scott of Collinsville was named recipient of the "Top Student Paper Award" and senior Savannah Keith of Owasso earned "Top Graduate Paper" and "Top Faculty Paper" awards for her presentation "Introverts and Extroverts in the Classroom: Correlations Between Personality Type and Academic Performance."

Awards were bestowed upon the RSU students at the OSTCA academic conference held Sept. 14 at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

Scott's paper, "Global Perspective on Children's Advertising Regulations: A Comparative Literary Analysis," examines how children are advertised to around the world.

Scott said the subject matter has been of interest to her for years.

"Ever since I took my intro to mass communication class my freshman year, I've been interested in ethics of children's media," Scott said. "I think about questions like: is this appropriate for children to watch? Are modern rating systems effective? How is easy access to the internet affecting children?"

For preparation, Scott used resources from the RSU library, researched works in academic journals, and watched advertisements from other countries.

"I wanted to look at advertising because of my strategic communications degree," she said. "I thought it would be interesting to see how advertising is done all over the world, with my goal being to see how other countries regulate their children's advertising before dissecting the same (children's advertising) in the United States."

In addition to her studies, Scott serves as production director for KRSC-FM RSU Radio.

Keith's study sought to find a correlation between personality type and academic performance, revealing that personality type has minimal impact while extroverts show a slight classroom preference advantage.

OSTCA is an association of college and university faculty promoting speech, theatre, and communication education in the state of Oklahoma and the surrounding region. Members from outside the state join the group at its convention because of its focus on creating a welcoming atmosphere that encourages collegiality, creativity, and collaboration.

RSU's Department of Communications offers the Bachelor of Arts in communications with emphasis available in broadcasting and new media, communication arts, and strategic communications.
