Fire Chief: Eugene's challenges and needs

Eugene Springfield Fire is a shared service between the Cities of Eugene and Springfield and crews strive to be prepared for any emergency regardless of location. Over the past couple of decades, Eugene's population has grown by 35,000 people and the number of residences has grown to almost 90,000, an increase of more than 20%. As our community has grown and changed, the number of firefighters able to respond to calls has remained practically unchanged, which creates a number of challenges that could affect our response readiness. Below, Eugene Springfield Fire Chief Mike Caven discusses the challenges and growing needs for firefighters and paramedics to serve Eugene.
