Hurricane Milton Update #3: Horse Refuge Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OCTOBER 7, 2024, AT 6:30 P.M.

Sandbag Distribution and Horse Refuge Program

DAVIE, Fla. - The Town of Davie continues to monitor Hurricane Milton which is now a category 5 storm. A tropical storm watch and flood watch is in effect for our area. The Town continues to urge residents to take all the necessary precautions to ensure they are safe.

Broward County has declared a local State of Emergency as the county including Davie is expected to receive continued severe weather conditions including torrential downpours and damaging winds as a result of Hurricane Milton.

Town Operations

There are currently no changes to the Town's municipal operations including parks and facilities. The Town is encouraging residents to monitor the National Weather Service and/or your local news stations to stay up to date on the latest weather conditions.

Sandbag Distribution

Sandbag distribution for today has ended. Please note that the Town will continue to provide self-service sandbags to Davie residents at 6591 Orange Drive tomorrow beginning 8 a.m., until supplies last. Each vehicle will only receive ten bags of sand. Proof of residency is required (a government-issued photo ID, a document that shows your Davie address such as a tax bill, TRIM notice, or voter registration). For more information, visit https://www.davie-fl.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1400.

Horse Refuge Program

The Town of Davie is offering a horse refuge site for Davie residents whose horse stalls may have been significantly impacted by the ongoing inclement weather. As a result, a limited number of animals will be accommodated on a first come-first served basis at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, 4201 Rodeo Way, Davie, FL, 33314. Horses may be dropped off tomorrow, October 8, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

All owners must complete the Horse Refuge Registration Form prior to arriving at the Arena. Please note that all fees related to this program are being waived at this time. All sections must be completed so there are no delays in processing the registration form timely. Stallions will not be permitted.

Horse owners are responsible for all feed, water, and items needed to secure their horse(s) in the designated pens. The arena will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for horse owners to access the facility and tend to their horse(s).

For additional information regarding the Horse Refuge, please contact Taylor Williams, Recreation Leader, at 954-797-1181 or 954- 892-0366, or Simone James, Special Events Coordinator, at 954-218-1320, [email protected].

Solid Waste Services

  • Currently, there are no changes to the solid waste services including curbside garbage collection and bulk pickup for this week.
  • Residents residing in Bulk Zones 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12, who are anticipated to receive services Tuesday, October 8 through Saturday, October 12, 2024, please continue to monitor the Town for any changes to the bulk schedule before putting items out for collection this week.
  • Residents should refrain from cutting trees or doing additional landscaping projects until after this storm passes as changes to schedule may occur last minute due to the storm's impact and severity. Landscape trimming projects such as tree limbs and shrubbery could become projectiles during the impending storm.
  • Coastal Waste and Recycling will complete regularly scheduled collections as long as drivers and crews can do so safely. Deteriorating weather could cause an abrupt cancellation of garbage and recycling collection services until the weather is favorable enough to resume those services safely.

Broward County Public Schools

Tuesday, October 8:

  • Schools and District offices will be open; however, the district will end all operations at 4 p.m.
  • The School Board Workshop, at 9 a.m., and Special School Board Meeting, at 2 p.m., will take place as scheduled. View the agendas or live stream through this link: https://www.browardschools.com/Page/55263

  • Schools and District offices will be closed.
  • All programs and activities - before and after school care, field trips, evening classes, events, and meetings - are canceled on both days.
  • The Magnet Program Expo scheduled for Thursday evening at Nova Southeastern University will be rescheduled.

Friday, October 11

  • Schools and District offices are expected to resume normal operations.

Private Development Storm Drains

Private developments are encouraged to check the storm drains in your community to ensure debris is not blocking the drain.

Construction Sites

With the uncertainty of Hurricane Milton, please:

  • Clean up all construction debris.
  • All construction materials, including roof tiles, must be secured, stored, or removed so as not to create a safety hazard.
  • Materials stockpiled on top of any structure under construction must be permanently installed. However, if such installation cannot be completed before the storm, then the property owner or contractor must:
  • Tie or band together all construction materials and mechanically fasten them to the top of the structure in such a manner, so a threat of becoming airborne during a tropical storm or hurricane is not experienced;
  • Remove the construction materials from the top of the structure and mechanically tie them down to the ground;
  • Remove the construction materials from the job site; or
  • Store the construction materials inside a protected structure.
  • Interiors of structures under construction must be secured to prevent materials from becoming airborne.
  • Commercial containers and portable toilets must be removed from a construction site or mechanically secured to the ground.
  • Piles of dirt, sand, and stone on a construction site shall be located away from the canals, right of ways, adjoining properties, swales, culverts, and inlet grates.

Tips to consider should you experience flooding in your home:

  • Stay out of the residence.
  • Do not try to pump the water out.
  • Stay out of the water - There may be sewage in the water so use good hygiene if you touch the water.
  • The Town of Davie does not pump water out of private properties or residences.
  • Leave your wet/damaged items in the residence until the event is over and the water
  • subsides.
  • For insurance purposes, consider documenting everything that is damaged - make a list and take photos if possible. This is best done once the flooding has stopped and the water has receded.

While the Town of Davie is committed to ensuring the safety of all people, we are asking our residents to help us by reviewing and preparing to implement your emergency plans. Knowing your risk, getting prepared and staying informed are just a few steps you can take.

To stay up to date on the latest updates regarding this weather phenomenon and its impact on

Davie, please register for news and announcements and ensure your information is updated in the Town's emergency alerting system, Everbridge.
