Red Cross Deploys Hundreds of Disaster Workers To Help People in Hurricane Beryl’s Path

Be safe. Listen to the advice of emergency officials and evacuate if asked to do so.

The American Red Cross is in Texas, helping people impacted by Hurricane Beryl which came ashore early Monday morning as a Category 1 storm with 80 mph winds, heavy rain and a life-threatening storm surge.

Beryl could bring as much as 15 inches of rain across the Texas Gulf Coast and communities inland, including Houston. This morning, more than 2.3 million customers are without power in Texas, and this number could continue to rise. The entire Houston metro area will see strong winds and torrential rain before Beryl moves north across parts of southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Missouri tonight into Tuesday.

"The Red Cross has been anticipating and preparing for Beryl for nearly a week, and we're honored to stand alongside our government and community partners to support Texans now," said Brad Kieserman, vice president of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the American Red Cross. "Collaboration among disaster responders is more critical than ever as the continuous pace of extreme weather continues to worsen and shortens the time we have to prepare for major storms."

RED CROSS RESPONSEThe organization's top priority is providing comfort, support and relief services to people in the path of this storm. The Red Cross is coordinatingwith local community partners and emergency responders to support evacuation centers for people who may need to seek shelter. Overnight, 125 people sought refuge in seven evacuation shelters.

Nearly 400 trained disaster workers from all over the country have answered the call to help those in the path of Beryl. The Red Cross also sent numerous emergency response vehicles, thousands of relief supplies and shelf-stable meals into the region ahead of Beryl's arrival.

BE SAFEListen to the advice of emergency officials and evacuate if asked to do so. The Red Cross and partners have evacuation shelters open to provide safe refuge from the hurricane. Anyone who needs a safe place to stay or a warm meal can find shelter information on redcross.org, the free Red Cross Emergency app or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).

Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability or citizenship status. We don't require people to show any kind of identification to enter a shelter - just their name and where they were living before the disaster.

If possible, people who plan to stay in a shelter are encouraged to bring prescription medications, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, other comfort items and important documents. Don't forget to bring any special items for children, such as diapers, formula and toys, or for family members who have unique needs.

Everything possible is done to accommodate service animals and domesticated pets comfortably in our shelters. Sometimes, depending on the situation, pets may need to be housed in a different location with support from local partners.

CARIBBEAN RESPONSE Beryl severely impacted people across the Caribbean in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica, Barbados and Jamaica. The losses are tremendous on the islands and there is a critical need for safe shelter and basic services.

Local Red Cross teams continue to face significant challenges getting into the affected areas to provide life-saving assistance. Other priorities include conducting rapid assessments and distributing relief items, getting communication systems back up and running, and re-establishing power and telecommunication services.

Thousands of people took refuge in hundreds of shelters across the islands.Hygiene kits, cleaning kits, tool kits, kitchen sets, tarpaulins, blankets and mosquito nets have already been dispatched to the hardest hit islands to meet the immediate needs of the affected population.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is playing a critical role in coordinating the response as the impact of Hurricane Beryl highlights the urgent need for a collaborative humanitarian relief across the Caribbean. The American Red Cross remains in close contact with Red Cross and Red Crescent network partners and is ready to assist as requested for areas outside of the U.S.
