At Mace® Brandblog, we are people much like you: we're parents, brothers, sisters, and often caregivers to our older parents. We worry about the same things you do, with the personal safety of our loved ones always on our minds. One of the things at the top of our minds right now is how to empower those we love.
Power is defined as the capacity to direct or influence the behavior of others. So, we thought we'd turn the tables and ask the children of MACE®employees what makes them feel powerful. Our first response is from the child of an employee who works in our sales and marketing department, his power comes through strength:
Q: How old are you?
A: 19
Q: Tell me about a time when you felt powerful.
A: When I hit an absolutely nasty squat PR last week, I felt like I could take God on a blood battle of fisticuffs.
Q: Who is the most powerful person you know and why?
A: Dwayne Johnson is an absolute rock of a man who radiates pure power from his muscles alone. He's powerful not only for his massive gains, but for his charisma and confidence.
BOOST CONFIDENCE WITH A PERSONAL SAFETY ALARM
And confidenceis what comes with knowing you and your children are protected. At Mace® Brand, we offer confidence for children of all ages through products such as our personal alarm keychain. It's legal in all 50 states and can easily clip onto a backpack. The personal safety alarm includes a built-in whistle, which is an added bonus. Check it out:
Another child of a MACE® employee responded this way:
Q: How old are you?
A: 12
Q: Tell me about a time when you felt powerful.
A: When I got a 100% on a test!
Q: Who is the most powerful person you know and why?
A: My brother because he is strong.
Several studies have suggested that when teachers have high expectations for students, students increase their motivation and achieve more. As parents, it's also our job to teach. Here are some ways you can teach your child to feel empowered:
IMPROVING CONFIDENCE
The confidence level of a child also plays a role in his or her personal safety. Confident children are more likely to stick up for themselves. Whether a school bully or a criminal, it's important to empower your children so they can react confidently - whether that means asking for help, or using their personal safety alarm - and prioritize their safety.
Here are five tips to improve your child's confidence:

WHAT MAKES OTHERS FEEL EMPOWERED AND POWERFUL
Sometimes the feeling of power or empowerment comes from an unexpected source. Here's what a few more children, young and old, had to say:
Cece Chan, 19
"I feel powerful when I can relate to other people. One one hand, it's great when someone's telling me something deeply personal, but on the flip side, I let things affect me more than I'd like to. But I always remember that when someone tries to hurt me, it's usually not about me - it's more often coming from a place of hurt. And I don't feel the need to hurt people. That makes me feel powerful."
Jan Philipp Sendker, 57
"Knowledge makes me feel powerful. It gives you the power to make decisions to move forward and act."
Nadia Carrillo, 19
"I think above all else I feel empowered when I pay attention to detail on any aspect of my life, whether it be my clothes or my schoolwork or even just hanging out with friends. Keeping the little things in mind helps me to feel complete and thus like the best version of myself I can be."
