FireSmart Interpretive Trail officially opened in Fort McMurray

Explore the trail to learn about the boreal forest and managing wildfire risk

A new interpretive trail showcasing the connections between the boreal forest, wildfires, and FireSmart, was welcomed with an official opening ceremony today.

It's crucial for us to understand how to live and play in the boreal forest while being mindful of the wildfire risks," said Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz. This trail is a valuable educational resource that demonstrates how we can achieve that."

The opening included guided tours for invited guests as well as several groups of young people.

New trail highlights FireSmart in action

Individuals, community groups and schools are encouraged to use the trail as an educational tool.

Located in Thickwood between Cornwall Drive and Beaver Trail, (part of the Birchwood Trails) the new trail shows FireSmart practices in construction and landscaping and includes interpretive signs, demonstration panels and displays.

It also includes information on the ecology of the boreal forest, an observation deck that overlooks the Birchwood Trails and has some fun elements for children.
