Nashville 911 Call Taker Supports Successful Childbirth over the Phone, Welcomes Healthy Baby Boy into the World

The Nashville Department of Emergency Communications (DEC) is celebrating an extraordinary moment in emergency response as a dedicated call taker recently played a crucial role in assisting a mother through childbirth over the phone, resulting in the safe and healthy birth of a baby boy.

On July 7, 2024, at approximately 2:50 pm, Nashville DEC received a 911 call for a distressed mother who was experiencing a sudden and unplanned childbirth at home. Recognizing the serious nature of the situation, Emergency Telecommunicator Kaitlyn Kramer immediately took charge, providing calm and clear instructions to guide the mother through the delivery process.

Despite the high-pressure environment, Kramer remained composed and professional, offering step-by-step guidance to ensure the safety of both the mother and the newborn. With the support of detailed procedural knowledge and compassionate communication, Kramer successfully assisted the mother in delivering a healthy baby boy.

Nashville Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after the birth to provide additional care and transport the mother and baby to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Both mother and child are reported to be in good health and doing well.

Paul McCallister, Assistant Director of Operations the Nashville Department of Emergency Communications provided the following statement:

"Everyday our Telecommunicators are prepared and ready to answer the call, not knowing what it may be. That preparation was evident by Kaitlyn as soon as she took control of the call, brought calm in a time of chaos for the caller."

The Nashville Department of Emergency Communications is responsible for managing emergency calls and coordinating responses across the city. This incident is a testament to the vital role that call takers play in emergency situations, serving as Nashville's FIRST first responders.
