LATROBE, PA - Saint Vincent College student Maggie Shero and alumna Victoria Saddler were awarded top honors in a hunter schooling show July 20 at the Rolling Rock Hunt Pony Club in Ligonier.

Shero, C 26, placed as grand champion in the Ron Howard Memorial Prize Division. Saddler, C'17, placed as grand champion in the Green Hunter Division. Schooling shows enable riders of all levels and disciplines to test their abilities before competing in larger shows.

Since she was 8 years old, Shero has been riding and training with Dr. Veronica Ent, a professor of education and equestrian program coach at Saint Vincent College. A psychology and business major, Shero also is taking an advanced horsemanship course at Saint Vincent.

The Ron Howard Memorial Division consisted of two classes of 2-foot jump obstacles and one class of flat performance of walk, trot and canter. Competitors were judged on equitation, which is focused on the rider's ability. Shero's horse, Solomon, is a draft-cross palomino who was an Amish cart-trained horse before joining the SVC lesson horse pool at Doubletree Farm.

Saddler, who graduated with a graphic arts degree, chose to attend Saint Vincent College partly because of its equestrian program. A native of Maryland, Saddler now lives in Apollo. She rode a gray ranch horse named George in the schooling show.

Ent owns and operates Doubletree Farm, a 350-acre private farm in New Alexandria that provides horses and facilities solely for Saint Vincent College. Students take horsemanship classes, participate in lessons and team practices, and enjoy trail rides and other activities.
