NYCEDC Releases RFP for Former Flushing Airport Site in Queens

80-Acre Lot in College Point is Prime Location for Wide Ranging Development Opportunities to Support Mixed-Use Neighborhood

Queens, NY-New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today released a request for proposals (RFP) for the development of an 80-acre plot of city-owned land in College Point, Queens. The site, home to the former Flushing Airport, has not been active since the airport was decommissioned in 1984 and has reverted to wetland.

This site is one of the few remaining large development opportunities in Queens and presents a rare opportunity to transform a large part of College Point and support the surrounding mixed-use neighborhood. The RFP seeks to encourage a wide variety of responses encompassing a range potential developments and uses. Considerations for the site can include housing, in accordance with Mayor Adams' Executive Order 43-requiring city agencies to review their portfolios for any potential housing development sites. The deadline to submit proposals is March 20, 2025, with the goal to name a developer in 2026.

"Today's release of the RFP for the former Flushing Airport site is a direct result of Mayor Adams' Executive Order 43 and our commitment to leaving no stone unturned in addressing New York City's housing crisis," said First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer. "This 80-acre, underutilized parcel in College Point has the potential to deliver much-needed housing, jobs, community spaces, and more. I look forward to seeing the innovative proposals the market can offer and how this site can help meet the needs of New Yorkers."

"For 40 years, the 80-acre former Flushing Airport sat vacant. At long last, Mayor Adams and NYCEDC will put this massive public asset to work for the benefit of Queens residents and the entire city," said NYCEDC President & CEO Andrew Kimball. "New Yorkers want a safer, more affordable city, with open space and community amenities and the development of neglected, underutilized sites like the former Flushing Airport in Queens will deliver just that."
