Empowering Tomorrow's CPAs Today

Seton Hall University recently hosted the "Accounting for the Future" Pre-College program, an inspiring two-day workshop designed to introduce high school students to the dynamic world of accounting. The program, held on Seton Hall's picturesque campus, brought together students from ten different high schools, including participants who traveled from as far away as Miami, Florida.

The workshop was uniquely crafted and led by six talented students from Seton Hall's CPA Pathway Apprenticeship Program, Phillip Bender, Diana Cavero, Amaury Flores Jr., Michael Lombardi, Daniel McBratney and Tyler Woods, who chose this impactful initiative as their capstone project. These apprentices, guided by Accounting faculty Danielle DiMeglio, MBA and Mark Holtzman, Ph.D., are on a distinctive path that blends rigorous academic coursework with real-world professional experience, positioning them as future leaders in the public accounting field. Their enthusiasm and expertise were evident as they guided the high school students through a series of engaging, interactive workshops, including guest speakers from a variety of accounting firms.

Hands-On Learning with a Technological Edge

The "Accounting for the Future" program provided an invaluable opportunity for high school students to gain insights into the accounting profession, from essential topics such as key skills for success in accounting and the transformative impact of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies on the profession. The apprentices incorporated interactive games and activities, ensuring that the learning experience was both educational and enjoyable.

Participants were thrilled with the opportunity to learn directly from those who are well on their way to becoming Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) along with seasoned professionals as guest speakers. The hands-on approach allowed the students to connect theory with practice, making complex concepts more accessible and engaging.

Bridging Classroom Learning and Professional Practice

Seton Hall's CPA Pathway Apprenticeship Program stands as a pioneering model that bridges the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. This innovative, work-for-credit program immerses participants in the real-world environment of accounting, providing a comprehensive pathway to CPA certification.

Participants in the program earn a full-time professional salary while:

  • Studying to pass the CPA exam,
  • Completing the 150-credit educational requirement for CPA certification, and
  • Meeting the one-year experience requirement.

This holistic approach ensures that students are not only academically prepared but also professionally seasoned, ready to meet the challenges of the accounting world.

Voices of Support and Success

Danielle DiMeglio, the faculty director of Seton Hall's CPA Pathway Apprenticeship Program, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative:

"The "Accounting for the Future" program exemplifies our commitment to innovative education and professional development. Our apprentices have done an outstanding job of mentoring and inspiring the next generation of accountants."

Mr. Terry Matthews, the principal Hudson Catholic, one of the participating high schools, shared his thoughts on the program's impact:

"This workshop was an eye-opener for our students. It not only introduced them to the field of accounting but also highlighted the importance of technological advancements in the profession. Our students returned motivated and eager to explore careers in accounting and business."

Joyce Strawser, Ph.D., dean of the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall, praised the collaborative spirit of the program:

"Our CPA Pathway Apprenticeship Program is a testament to the innovative educational models we are developing at Seton Hall. By bringing together high school students and our apprentices along with Accounting professionals from industry, we are fostering a community of learning and professional growth that benefits everyone involved."

Inspiring the Future

The "Accounting for the Future" Pre-College program is more than just a workshop; it is a beacon of what is possible when academic excellence and industry collaboration meets professional ambition. Seton Hall University continues to lead the way in providing transformative educational experiences that prepare students for successful careers in accounting and beyond.

For the apprentices, the experience of teaching and sharing insights with future accountants was profoundly rewarding. Daniel McBratney, one of the apprentices, reflected on the experience:

"It was a pleasure teaching the accounting workshop to these bright high school students. Seeing their enthusiasm about the subject was inspiring. I hope the experience has sparked an interest in accounting and provided them with skills for their future endeavors."

Through initiatives like this, Seton Hall University reaffirms its commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders in the accounting profession.
