Senator Markey Statement on Healey-Driscoll Administration Decision Not to Proceed With Proposed Machine Gun Range at Joint Base Cape Cod

Boston (October 2, 2024) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement regarding the Healey-Driscoll administration's decision not to proceed with signing a contract for the proposed Machine Gun Range at Joint Base Cape Cod (JBCC).

"I commend the Healey-Driscoll administration for its decision not to proceed with signing a contract for the immediate development of the proposed machine gun range at Joint Base Cape Cod. According to interim findings by experts at the Environmental Protection Agency, the proposed machine gun range could lead to an unacceptable risk of damage to the principal source of drinking water for Cape Cod. This decision is also in accord with the thousands of comments and serious concerns raised by a wide range of civic, business, and environmental organizations in Cape Cod.

"My office has spoken with representatives of the Healey-Driscoll Administration, leadership at Joint Base Cape Cod, and federal, state, county and local officials to discuss how to meet the critical training needs of the Guard at other existing locations, supported by new, cutting-edge technology, while continuing to protect the Upper Cape Water Supply Reserve. Together, we can ensure our dedicated service members will continue to have the best training and resources available - and that the residents of Cape Cod will avoid the further risk of degradation to their essential drinking water."
