Statement on the dissolution of the Move Forward Party of Thailand

New Zealand notes the Thai Constitutional Court's decision on the 7th of August ordering the dissolution of the Move Forward Party and the banning of some of its leaders from politics.

New Zealand strongly supports democratic governance and democratic rights around the world and the right for voters to freely choose who they want to represent them in Parliament.

New Zealand notes that the Move Forward Party is the largest opposition party in the Thai Parliament. Opposition parties have a critical role to play in a functioning democracy by representing those people who voted for them in the election.
