MEETING TO EMPOWER PARTICIPATING PACIFIC ISLAND...

The first face-to-face meeting for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Leaders for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific: Sea and Human Security Training for our Pacific Island Countries was to empower participants as leaders and representatives with the knowledge and tools needed to address some of the most pressing issues of our time: sea and human security.

The Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Mr. Maritino Nemani opened 10-day training in Nadi yesterday (01/10/2024).

PS Nemani pointed out that a range of topics will be covered in the 10-day training, including exploring International and Regional Frameworks on Sea and Human Security; Understanding the Role of Governments, IGOs, and NGOs; Sea and Human Security in the Pacific and Asia; Promoting the Blue Economy; Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies; Addressing Food Insecurity; Conservation and Environmental Protection; Fostering International Cooperation; and Developing Leadership, Teamwork, and Communication Skills.

Fiji's Foreign White Paper Policy outlines the Government's foreign policy initiatives, such as the promotion of the Ocean of Peace, which is the single most significant contribution that Fiji can make to peace and security in our neighbourhood and the broader Indo-Pacific region. The White Paper reaffirms the central position of the Pacific region in our foreign policy calculations.

"This collaboration will equip participants with the knowledge, skills and tools necessary to address the pressing challenges," PS Nemani said.

"I encourage all of you to actively participate, share your experiences and learn from each other. Create innovative solutions that not only protect our oceans but also empower our communities."

PS Nemani acknowledged UNITAR and the Government of Japan for organising the training and recognised the interests of participants for their commitment in addressing sea and human security issues for a safer, more secure and sustainable Pacific for all.
