HDIFC Family Day Hits It Out of the Park

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -

Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center employees and their families gathered at a Battle Creek Battle Jacks baseball game July 31 for a memorable Family Day hosted by the local Morale, Welfare, and Recreation office.

The annual event brought together Defense Logistics Agency employees, federal retirees, and their loved ones for a day filled with excitement, camaraderie, and entertainment at the baseball diamond.

The festivities kicked off with DLA Disposition Services Director Mike Cannon throwing the first pitch and setting the tone for an engaging and enjoyable day for the more than 850 attendees whose participation marked an increase from previous family days.

Organizers said events like this offer a chance for informal communication and building relationships across the federal center community.

The Battle Jacks staff and MWR team organized an array of attractions to ensure that everyone had a fantastic time, regardless of age. On breaks between innings, families watched the antics of the staff spraying water cannons into the stands, and the silly results of a dizzy bat game featuring Army Col. Woodje Caldwell, the new DLA Disposition Services deputy director. Kids were also given an opportunity to run the bases.

"MWR has invested more this year in Family Day than ever before, and it feels good to see our DLA employees and their families enjoy it," said Steven Gales, MWR business manager. "This year we included food and entertainment as part of our event and it really gave families an opportunity to relax, not worry about what they had to pay for, and just have fun."

Families helped themselves to a ballpark buffet that included classic favorites such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst and beverages. The unlimited food provided much-appreciated fuel for attendees to enjoy the game and participate in various activities during the afternoon.

There was no shortage of engaging activities and interactive areas like bounce houses, backyard-type sports games, and cornhole. Information booths set up by the Battle Creek Police Department, DLA Emergency Services, the federal Employee Assistance Program, MWR, and DOD's Family Advocacy Program offered attendees informative materials, giveaways, and the opportunity to learn about essential services that contribute to the well-being of the HDIFC community.

Among the most anticipated highlights of the day was the appearance of Brutus the therapy pig. The lovable and gentle Brutus was available for adults and children to pet, cuddle, and even feed some of his favorite treats. Interactions with Brutus were not only heartwarming but also offered therapeutic benefits, providing a well-rounded and wholesome experience for all attendees.
