American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine – June 5-8, 2024

Event

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) held its annual forum from June 5-8 in Minneapolis.

Program

The forum drew more than 2500 attendees. On offer were more than 600 sessions and several hundred research abstracts and e-posters. All content is available virtually until October 31.

Awards

Robert W. Kirk Award for Professional Excellence

Dr. Edward C. Feldman

Dr. Edward C. Feldman (California-Davis '73), Berkeley, California, was honored for an outstanding career and a lifetime of contributions to the college and to veterinary internal medicine. Dr. Feldman is a professor emeritus at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. A diplomate of the ACVIM in small animal internal medicine, he is known for his work in veterinary endocrinology. Dr. Feldman has co-authored and edited several textbooks, including "Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine" and "Canine and Feline Endocrinology."

Lee and Inge Pyle Service Award

Dr. Susan L. "Suzi" White

Dr. Susan L. "Suzi" White (California-Davis '73), Watkinsville, Georgia, for outstanding and dedicated service to the ACVIM in a volunteer capacity for 10 or more years. Dr. White is the Josiah Meigs distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. A diplomate of the ACVIM in large animal internal medicine, Dr. White has served as president and chair of the ACVIM board of regents. Active with the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), she is a past chair of the AAEP Educational Programs and Member Engagement committees.

William R. Fenner Early Career Award for Outstanding Service

Dr. François-René Bertin

Dr. François-René Bertin, West Lafayette, Indiana, for exceptional service to the ACVIM in a volunteer capacity within the first 10 years following board certification. A 2008 veterinary graduate of the University of Nantes in France and a diplomate of the ACVIM in large animal internal medicine, Dr. Bertin is an associate professor and chief of staff of the large animal hospital at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. He has volunteered with the ACVIM in several roles, including serving as chair of the ACVIM Education and Research Committee.

Specialty Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Stephanie J. ValbergDr. Dennis J. Chew

Drs. Neil K. Harpster (Pennsylvania '65), Nashua, New Hampshire; Stephanie J. Valberg (Guelph '83), Williamston, Michigan; and Dennis J. Chew (Michigan State '72), Columbus, Ohio. A diplomate of the ACVIM in cardiology, Dr. Harpster is the former director of the cardiology department at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. He was one of the first veterinarians to pursue specialization in a chosen field. A diplomate of the ACVIM in large animal internal medicine, Dr. Valberg is director of the Valberg Neuromuscular Diagnostic Laboratory at Kentucky Equine Research. She is known for her work in advancing the understanding of equine neuromuscular physiology and disease. A diplomate of the ACVIM in small animal internal medicine, Dr. Chew is a professor emeritus at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is known for his contributions to small animal internal medicine, specifically in the fields of nephrology and urology. Dr. Chew co-authored the textbook "Urinalysis in the Dog and Cat." All three awardees were honored for leadership in their ACVIM specialties.
