77 more Detroit families living in Land Bank homes receive deeds after completing Occupied Buy Back Program

• Nearly 1,200 participants have become homeowners since program was created in 2016

The Detroit Land Bank Authority (DLBA) is proud to announce the Occupied Buy Back Program Exit Event, a celebration of the remarkable achievements of participants who have successfully fulfilled all program requirements and are now transitioning into homeownership.

The DLBA's Occupied Buy Back Program has been a cornerstone in helping 77 participants in 2024 alone to reach the milestone of homeownership. This program has empowered Detroit residents by providing essential resources and unwavering support, enabling them to meet rigorous program standards.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of our Buy Back Program participants. This event highlights their commitment and perseverance to become homeowners," said Tammy Daniels, CEO of Detroit Land Bank Authority. "The DLBA is proud to support them on their journey and to contribute to the revitalization of our neighborhoods."

Since the program's inception in 2016, nearly 1,200 individuals have completed the process and received their deeds, marking a significant impact on community revitalization. This event highlighted several program graduates who have demonstrated incredible resilience and dedication. These participants have not only secured their homes but have also restored family legacies, revitalized properties, and upheld the spirit of community. Their stories reflect the power of perseverance and the positive impact of the DLBA's initiatives.

Prior to enrolling in the program, these residents were occupying Land Bank-owned houses. Buy Back participants pay $1,000 to enter the program and spend a year learning about homeownership while saving for their first summer tax bill. Since 2016, more than a thousand people have purchased houses through Buy Back, and so far, more than 1200 have successfully exited the program and received their deed.

"The Occupied Buy Back program is an incredible example of how the Detroit Land Bank is helping thousands of Detroiters achieve homeownership," said Deputy Mayor Todd Bettison, who helped to present several of the deeds at today's ceremony. "Not only does owning your home give you security and stability, it is also the single most important way families can build generational wealth. We are so proud of each of today's graduates for their hard work and commitment to reach this important life milestone."
