Veterans Memorial Building Update

Work continues on the Veterans Memorial Building removal process. DeCarlo Demolition was on site today to deliver equipment and install temporary construction fencing around the building. Demolition operations are scheduled to begin Tuesday.

DeCarlo is committed to sustainable practices and will prioritize recycling materials to minimize landfill waste. Blocks and bricks will be broken up and reused in other construction sites to prevent washouts and raise sites for development, while concrete will be crushed and used for parking lots and as road base.

DeCarlo is also committed to ensuring the process has a minimal impact on Grinnellians' everyday lives by using specific routes that will keep trucks out of heavy traffic areas while disposing of materials. They will not work on the site on Thursdays to avoid disrupting the farmers market.

Following the removal of the building, the area will be backfilled, graded, and compacted to ensure a level surface. The area will be seeded with grass this fall, and construction of the new sculpture to commemorate veterans is projected to begin in 2025.
