G7: UNESCO welcomes declaration of education ministers in Trieste

UNESCO welcomes the Declaration of the G7 Education Ministers, which recognizes the impact of current multiple, interconnected crises on education systems, and the powerful role of learning to address these challenges.

"In this moment of dramatic change, investing in education is what we need the most," said Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education. "It empowers us to better understand the world and to activity participate in democracy, the economy, peace-building efforts, and climate action."

At the meeting, UNESCO emphasized the importance of inclusion and investing in teachers for transforming learning and unlocking everyone's potential. In addition, UNESCO highlighted the need to enhance early childhood education and care, which is one of the most beneficial investments a country can make to promote holistic development, gender equality and social cohesion. Failing to invest in every learner's education has dire consequences not only for individuals, but for societies and economies as a whole. According to a new UNESCO report, out-of-school children and educational gaps cost the global economy US$10 trillion a year.

The need for lifelong learning has never been more critical, through skilling, reskilling and upskilling. "We need global citizens equipped with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to tackle interconnected challenges, including inclusive and equitable digital and green transitions," stated Ms Giannini.
