In a significant move towards promoting the use of Classical Arabic, the Arabic Language and Literature Department at the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Qatar (QU), in collaboration with the Culture and Arts Chapter of the QU Alumni Association, proudly announces the official launch of the "Speak Arabic Classically" initiative.

The event, graced by the presence of Dr. Seeta Al-Athba, Associate Dean for Languages, Communication, and Translation at the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Abdeslam Alaoui, Head of Arabic Language and Literature Department; and Dr. Aisha Al-Kuwari, Director of the Qatari Forum for Authors, along with esteemed faculty and students, marked the commencement of a year-long initiative aimed at encouraging students, faculty, and staff to communicate in Classical Arabic both within and outside the university. The "Speak Arabic Classically" initiative seeks to elevate the presence of Classical Arabic in communication, scientific research, and cultural activities. It aligns with Qatar's commitment to the protection of the Arabic language, as evidenced by the language protection law enacted in 2019.

The launch event featured welcoming speeches, an introduction to the initiative's goals and activities, and a theatrical presentation titled "In Arabic," written by Dr. Loui Khalil and performed by students from the Arabic Language Center for Non-Arabic Speakers. The play depicted the reality of Arab societies where the Arabic language is neglected in public life, rendering its speakers like strangers unable to find meaningful connections. Additionally, the event included a poetry recitation segment titled "My Language," presented by student poet Mohammed Yaqoub Al-Tamimi, and an Arabic calligraphy demonstration by Mr. Hussam Al-Nahas for all attendees. The event concluded with the launch of the hashtag #SpeakArabicClassically, inviting the university community and Arabic language enthusiasts to participate on social media platforms and advocate for the use of Classical Arabic.

In her address, Dr. Seeta Al-Athba, Associate Dean for Languages, Communication, and Translation at the College of Arts and Sciences, emphasized the importance of preserving Classical Arabic, stating, "It is important to preserve Classical Arabic as it is the official language of Arab countries, just as all nations worldwide prioritize their languages. Arabic holds a distinctive significance as the gateway to understanding the Holy Quran accurately, steering clear of misconceptions that give rise to distorted and deviant thoughts adversely affecting not only individuals but also the entire society." Dr. Al-Athba emphasized that employing Classical Arabic in communication and scientific research is an inevitable necessity for any intellectual rebirth, as nations rise through their languages; no nation rises without nurturing its language.

Dr. Al-Athba also highlighted that the responsibility of preserving Arabic falls upon everyone, not solely on the Arabic language department or those associated with it. Classical Arabic is the collective identity of the Arab and Islamic nations, carrying their culture and heritage, contributing to the development of expressive, creative, and critical thinking, achieving academic excellence, and fostering constructive and beautiful communication within the college among professors and students. It creates an academic environment that stimulates and attracts creativity. Modern Standard Arabic, distinguished by its vast richness and high precision of expression, is not merely a tool for communication but a tool for thought and a means to convey accurate ideas, opinions, and concepts."

Dr. Abdeslam Alaoui, Head of the Arabic Language and Literature Department, emphasized the importance of Classical Arabic. He underscored the necessity of launching initiatives and events that prioritize and promote its use, encouraging writing and speaking in this form of language. Dr. Alaoui pointed out that such efforts lead to refining literary talents and creative abilities among students, elevating their literary taste. Moreover, Classical Arabic contributes to effective communication among students and their professors, who come from diverse cultural backgrounds at QU. The department remains open to all initiatives that serve Classical Arabic and contribute to the overall cultural landscape.

In his speech, Dr. Mohammad Al-Rhawi, the head of the organizing committee and the initiator, emphasized that the initiative aims to encourage the university community to communicate Classical Arabic. It seeks to bring it closer to people and change the negative image associated with it, dispelling notions that portray it as a difficult, intricate language, and the like. Dr. Al-Rhawi highlighted the ongoing struggle against the Arabic language using phrases intended to create an imaginary barrier between it and its speakers, emphasizing that the launch event marks the beginning, not the entirety, of the initiative. The initiative includes various activities such as competitions, seminars, poetry days, oratory events, debates, presentations, and an art exhibition, as well as discussions, lectures, short video productions, and TV and radio programs. These events and activities aim to showcase the beauty of the Arabic language, encourage its usage, and promote its preservation.

On her part, Mrs. Amna AbdulKarim, Deputy Head of the Culture and Arts Chapter QU Alumni Association and a member of the organizing committee, stated, "The Chapter supports anything that strengthens the connection between graduates and their alma mater, serving culture and the arts. Cultural initiatives, events, and activities play a crucial role in enhancing interactions, communication, and reinforcing the presence of Arab-Islamic identity. The chapter is an integral part of the association, acting as a bridge for communication between the university and its graduates, who serve as ambassadors and representatives in society and its institutions."

The "Speak Arabic Classically" initiative represents a crucial step towards preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Arabic language. It aims to create a vibrant academic environment that stimulates creativity, encourages dialogue, and reinforces the identity of the Arabic-speaking community.
