Places to Love Program Celebrates Olympic-Inspired Skateboarding and Breakdancing Events

19/07/2024

Georges River Council is happy to announce that it is a round three partner under Transport for NSW Places to Love Program. This initiative provides an opportunity for Georges River Council to explore how public spaces near active and public transport options can be used to help enhance local amenity, and foster a vibrant night time activation in the Georges River area.

Places to Love is a program that trials improving access and quality of local public space in transport hub precincts. The program encourages communities to embrace and celebrate their unique local places by supporting a variety of activations and initiatives.

To kick off the Places to Love project, Georges River Council will engage with the community on what they would like to see as part of the program while hosting skateboarding and breakdancing events, alongside screenings of the Paris 2024 Olympics competitions for men and women's preliminary heats.

The events, Skate, Break and Build, scheduled in August 2024 at Olds Park, Penshurst, will feature coaching from skateboarding and breakdancing experts, thrilling demonstrations from pros like Nixen Osborne showcasing their skills, street art workshops, music, food and live screenings of the Olympics.

Georges River Council Mayor Sam Elmir said, "The Places to Love Program aims to support the community to walk or wheel from public transport to activated public spaces and highlight the unique characteristics of our local amenities.

"These events are a response to the program's call to enhance public spaces and support a night time economy and activities," said the Mayor.

"The energy and creativity of skateboarding and breakdancing will transform Old's Park into a hub of cultural expression and athletic prowess, breathing community spirit and life into these spaces.

"These events will highlight the local community's unique amenities and help foster a vibrant night time experience. At the events, Georges River Council will seek community feedback on what day or night activities the community wants to see more of in our local area."

About Places to Love Program:

Transport for NSW's Places to Love program collaborates with a number of pilot councils on demonstration projects that trial improving walkable access to, and the quality of, local public space. The program trials temporary changes that can inform and guide future interventions to public space. The demonstration projects are a way to quickly test how to make public spaces more vibrant and active using trials, pop-ups and semi-permanent changes to test ideas and build the case for longer-term change.
