WATERLOO - Beginning in Fall 2025, Wilfrid Laurier University's reconstructed Bachelor of Music program will offer students unparalleled flexibility and inclusivity, allowing students the choice to specialize in a specific genre and explore various musical styles. The program will welcome students from all musical backgrounds, including classical, jazz, opera, rock, pop, musical theatre and more.

Laurier's new Bachelor of Music curriculum represents a bold step forward in music education, designed to embrace the diverse musical interests of today's students and prepare them for successful, sustainable careers in a rapidly changing and lucrative industry.

"Our goal is to provide an educational experience that reflects the dynamic nature of the music industry while maintaining the highest standards of musical excellence," said Cynthia Johnston Turner, dean of the Faculty of Music. "This updated curriculum is about more than just music; it's about empowering students to shape their musical identity, explore new opportunities, and thrive in a global, interconnected world."

Key highlights of the program include lessons in classical or contemporary and commercial genres with opportunities for cross-training. Students will benefit from the guidance of faculty with strong industry ties, ensuring personalized mentorship and collaboration opportunities throughout their education. Additionally, the program offers a "Navigating the Music Industry Ecosystem" certificate, equipping students with the essential business knowledge needed to succeed in the music industry.

Students will be able to customize their education through diverse specializations, including performance, music therapy, composition, and more, gaining the tools and knowledge to succeed in a career as a performer, educator, composer, or industry professional.

Laurier's Bachelor of Music program boasts strong partnerships with leading institutions such as Metalworks Institute, Suzuki String School of Guelph, and Randolph College for the Performing Arts. Students also benefit from access to the Laurier Academy of Music and Arts (LAMA), which serves nearly 1,000 community members aged one to 95 with specialized programs such as Voice Lab, QuartetFest, Piano Lab, and Rap Camp.
