Grindr's Data Team Drives Snowflake Cost Optimization Through Collaboration with Astronomer

Grindr is proud to announce that our data team, spearheaded by Staff Data Engineer Matt Shancer, has been instrumental in optimizing our Snowflake costs through a successful collaboration with Astronomer, the leading platform for fully-managed Apache Airflow. By incorporating our innovative query tagging solution, Astronomer has created the open-source tool SnowPatrol to help other teams achieve the same cost savings that we have.

This partnership reflects our firm commitment to leveraging open-source technologies and collaborating with industry leaders to drive efficiency, cost savings, and innovation in our data infrastructure.

Grindr Leadership in Snowflake Cost Optimization

Matt Shancer's technical expertise and leadership have driven our Snowflake cost optimization efforts. His and the data team's fundamental contributions include:

  1. Implementing monitoring dashboards and alerts to track Snowflake usage and costs, providing granular visibility into our spend and enabling proactive cost control measures.
  2. Developing a tagging strategy to associate Snowflake queries with specific Airflow DAGs and tasks, enabling granular cost attribution and pinpointing areas for optimization.
  3. Identifying and addressing inefficiencies in our data workflows, resulting in a remarkable $600,000 savings in Snowflake costs.

These achievements laid the foundation for our collaboration with Astronomer and the successful integration of SnowPatrol into our data infrastructure.

Collaborating with Astronomer to Integrate SnowPatrol

Recognizing the potential of SnowPatrol to optimize Snowflake costs further, our data team worked closely with Astronomer to integrate this powerful open-source tool into our data workflows. Throughout the collaboration, our team:

  1. Shared Grindr's query tagging code cost optimization strategies to inform SnowPatrol's development.
  2. Provided valuable feedback and insights to refine SnowPatrol's features and functionality.

To benefit the broader Airflow community, Astronomer has incorporated some of our work on Snowflake optimization into SnowPatrol.

Grindr's Commitment to Open-Source Technologies

At Grindr, we are committed to leveraging open-source technologies and actively participating in the open-source community. Our collaboration with Astronomer on SnowPatrol exemplifies this commitment, as we recognize the value of sharing knowledge and expertise to drive innovation and solve everyday challenges in the data engineering and analytics space.

We are excited to share our work and affirm our commitment to developing open-source tools that can benefit organizations worldwide.
