Bismarck’s First MINI Roundabout to Open, 19th St & Calgary Ave

Roughly 7:00am on Wednesday 9/4/2024, Bismarck's first MINI roundabout will open to traffic at the intersection of 19th Street & Calgary Avenue.

Mini roundabouts are smaller than normal, typically fit within the existing curb lines, and have a center island that is mostly red concrete instead of landscaping. Mini roundabouts cost significantly less to construct than normal sized roundabouts, but still provide the benefits of reduced crashes and less overall wait time when compared to traditional four-leg intersections.

Navigating a mini roundabout is the same as a normal sized roundabout. As you approach the roundabout: reduce your speed, yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, yield to traffic already circling within the roundabout, and then proceed to the right of the center island in a counterclockwise direction, staying in the black asphalt lane. When vehicles with trailers go through the roundabout, the trailers will off track onto the red concrete area.

Bismarck also has two normal sized roundabouts still under construction this summer: South Washington Street & Burleigh Avenue and the new intersection of 64th Avenue North & Ridgeland Drive.
