Safety measures introduced at Cunningham Lane for start of school year

School is starting, and with it, the City of Clarksville-funded project to add new, groundbreaking safety improvements along Cunningham Lane near New Providence Middle School is being finalized.

Extending 420 feet from Glenkirk Drive to the Exxon Convenience Store on the north side of Cunningham Lane, with roughly 200 feet of curb and gutter, the Clarksville Street Department is introducting a variety of new safety features with this project.

The Street Department identified this segment of Cunningham Lane as a missing link in the connection between Cunningham Plaza, Northridge Subdivision, New Providence Middle School, and the Kleeman Community Center, just to name a few.

A new 5-foot sidewalk now runs east to west on the north side of Cunningham Lane with a crosswalk on Glenkirk Drive, and another one across Cunningham Lane just to the east of the bus exit.

The City is also incorporating new technology in the project. The crosswalk on Cunningham Lane will feature in-roadway warning lights, as well as LED flashing warning signs, which are all push-button actuated.

Once activated, this section of roadway will light up, triggering motorists to come to a complete stop, and allowing pedestrians to safely cross the street.

This is one of many projects throughout all geographical regions of the City of Clarksville that are coming to fruition as part of the Mayor's Transportation 2020+ master plan. To see the full plan, visit the City website at: https://www.clarksvilletn.gov/1043/Transportation-2020 .
