Job fair provides TSTC students with opportunities to find careers

(ROSENBERG, Texas) - The halls of the Industrial Technology Center at Texas State Technical College's Fort Bend County campus were packed during the fall semester Industry Job Fair on Tuesday, Oct. 1. TSTC students and alumni were able to meet with representatives from over 60 companies and TSTC industry partners.

For many students, job fairs such as these provide the ideal opportunity to find new career paths or meet with companies they had their eyes on already. Such was the case for Daniel Alverez, a Diesel Equipment Technology student in his final semester.

"Job fairs are really helpful for me in my job hunt," he said. "I was able to talk with people from Christian Brothers Automotive, which I'm interested in since they work with small- to medium-sized trucks."

Industry booths were generally staffed by two representatives with gear, snacks and demonstrations being available for the students to interact with. In some cases, the representatives brought specific tools or tests that they had students use in order to gauge their skills.

While some companies were there simply for brand awareness, many were actively hiring. One such company was Texas Instruments (TI).

"We are hiring a lot right now as we are opening a number of new fabrication sites," said Guoda Lian, a representative of TI. "We are especially interested in programs such as Electrical Power and Controls as we deal primarily with semiconductors."

For the instructors and staff, the job fair was a time of pride as they watched the students talk with industry partners.

"Seeing the students packed around the booths is such a great feeling," said Judy Cox, manager of Career Services. "I always tell them to visit every table as they don't know where their next opportunity could be."

Spring registration for current TSTC students has begun. For new students, registration begins on Monday, Oct. 28. For more information, visit tstc.edu.
