12th European Cybersecurity Month focuses on raising awareness about manipulative tactics online

This year's edition of the European Cybersecurity Month addresses the increasing trend of social engineering.

The annual campaign is dedicated to promoting cybersecurity awareness and good practices. It focuses on social engineering where scammers use impersonation, phishing emails or fake offers to deceive people into taking certain actions online or giving out sensitive or personal information.

The European Commission supports the Cybersecurity month campaign with events that take place across Europe throughout October. The most successful and innovative promotional material on cybersecurity will be recognised with an award.

The kick-off event will take place in the European Eco​nomic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions in Brussels from 2 to 4 October, while anyone registered can follow and participate online.

Margrethe Vestager, European Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, said:

"This October, like every year, we urge you to stay vigilant online. Attackers are getting more creative in engineering scams, exploiting your trust and tricking individuals, businesses and organisations into sharing information. Cyber threats are evolving at a rapid pace and we constantly need to update our skills to stay safe online."

The Commission's Eurobarometer on cybersecurity skills, published in May 2024, underlines the need to raise cybersecurity awareness and training, particularly from the point of view of EU businesses. The Commission's Cybersecurity Skills Academy, a platform bringing together cybersecurity skills courses and initiatives from across Europe, is accessible to everyone online.
