Houghton Lodge receives Rural England Prosperity Fund grant for orangery improvements

Houghton Lodge, a stunning venue in Test Valley that welcomes over 8,000 visitors annually, has received approximately £8,300 from the UK Government through the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. This grant has been used to enhance the orangery, a popular space for weddings, events, and as an extension to the tearoom.

During the summer, the orangery was becoming excessively hot. The grant enabled Houghton Lodge to improve natural ventilation and install air conditioning and heating, powered by their existing solar panels. As a result, the tearoom is now extending its hours and hosting an increasing number of events. The gardens also recorded record visitor numbers in August.

Daniel Busk, owner of Houghton Lodge, said, "In response to the challenges posed by climate change and extreme temperatures, our new air conditioning system is an essential addition. It ensures that both our staff and visitors can enjoy a comfortable environment in the tea rooms, regardless of the weather outside."

Portfolio Holder for Countryside and Climate Emergency, Councillor Johnston said, "We are delighted to support Houghton Lodge with this grant. Enhancing the orangery not only improves the visitor experience for our Test Valley tourism offer, but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices, through the use of solar energy."
