As Hurricane Milton approaches, Volusia County encourages everyone to prioritize their safety. Adhering to essential safety guidelines can help prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities. If you are evacuating, please drive cautiously and remain aware of potential road closures. It is advisable to avoid driving and stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Before the storm, we recommend that residents take proactive measures by photographing their homes. These time-stamped photos will be invaluable for submitting claims in the event of any damage. Locate all flashlights and power banks ahead of a potential power outage during the storm. In the event of a power outage, we recommend turning off your breakers to prevent potential damage from appliances left on. Once the power returns, you can switch them back on one at a time. If you smell smoke, immediately call 911.

When using a generator, always read the owner's manual and place the unit at a safe distance from your homes and properties. Never operate a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces, including garages. It's essential to check the wind conditions to ensure exhaust fumes are not blowing toward your home. Carbon monoxide from generator exhaust is completely colorless and odorless. To prevent CO poisoning, never use grills or generators indoors, keep generators on dry surfaces away from entry points, and regularly test and maintain CO alarms. Allow your generator to cool for at least 20-30 minutes before refueling to prevent fire hazards. Be cautious as the exterior of generators can become very hot and avoid contact without protective gear. Maintain ample airflow around the generator and keep it dry to prevent short circuits. Avoid attempting repairs on your generator to reduce the risk of electric shock, and keep cords organized to prevent tripping hazards while ensuring they are visible for monitoring damage. Importantly, never connect your generator directly to a wall outlet, as this poses serious risks. Always connect the generator to appliances with heavy-duty extension cords.

Always assume any downed power line is energized. Do not attempt to move any objects in contact with it and avoid standing water where power lines may be present. If a power line falls on your vehicle while driving, remain inside and drive away from it.

Volusia County staff will continue coordinating with state officials and the National Weather Service to assess potential local impacts from the storm. The Citizens Information Center (CIC) is open 24/7 until further notice, residents can reach the CIC at 866-345-0345.
