City of South Fulton Deploys First Transport-Capable Rescue Unit

City of South Fulton Fire Rescue Department steps up emergency services with new transport-capable rescue units.

The City of South Fulton Fire Rescue Department is proud to announce that its first transport-capable rescue unit goes into operation on Monday, July 15, 2024. This deployment is a part of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Expansion Plan as outlined in the department's 2024 Initiative.

The rescue unit will be based out of Fire Station 3 on Stone Wall Tell Road and will respond to high acuity (critical) calls in the area. They will also respond to fire calls to assist with rescues, emergency medical services for civilians and firefighters, and provide rapid transport if necessary.

The unit is the first of three to go into service in the City of South Fulton, with a second unit to tentatively be deployed in September, and a third unit to be tentatively in operation by the end of the year.

Each rescue unit will be staffed as an Advanced Life Support Unit, which includes one paramedic and one advanced EMT. "Our goal is to build a high-performance EMS team," says Assistant Fire Chief Tim Rohner, who leads the emergency services division for South Fulton Fire and Rescue.

"Approximately 80% of the calls we receive are for EMS. We are often the first responders on the scene in an emergency. Our other vehicles are only equipped with basic life support systems. These transport-capable rescue units will allow our team to provide not only more advanced on-site care, but to also provide transport if necessary to the nearest hospital."

Chief Rohner said that the department will utilize a new records management program to collect and analyze EMS data to prioritize which areas of the community can be best served by these units.

As the South Fulton Fire and Rescue Department grows their EMS division, those interested in learning more and potentially joining the program are encouraged to reach out. "We have an amazing partnership with Atlanta Area Tech and currently have fourteen people in their EMT program. All our fire recruits go through EMS Training under the instruction of Lieutenant Terrance Kerney, our Program Coordinator, and receive advanced EMT level certification," says Chief Rohner.

The initiative also includes additional hands-on EMS training at all South Fulton Fire Stations, led by Lieutenant Cesar Reyes. The City of South Fulton's Fire Rescue Department continues to grow their skills and acquire better technology and apparatus in the pursuit of a safer, well-served community.
