Jeremy Singer-Vine Joins The Times as Data Editor

I'm thrilled to announce that Jeremy Singer-Vine is joining The Times as our data editor, leading a new data journalism team that will partner with desks across the newsroom to produce compelling, data-driven reporting.

Jeremy was the data editor for BuzzFeed News from March 2014 until 2022, where he built and led BuzzFeed's investigative data team, which pursued ambitious stories and served as a resource for the newsroom at large. The team dug into suspicious transactions flowing through the global banking system, match-fixing in tennis, and the H-2 visa program, among many other topics; collaborated with every desk in the newsroom; and shared bylines with at least 70 different colleagues.

More recently, he's been working as a freelance data editor for smaller newsrooms, teaching at Columbia's Lede Program and running the Data Liberation Project, an effort he launched to obtain, document and publish previously unavailable government datasets. Through FOIA requests and web-scraping, the project and its volunteers have made data available on facilities handling highly hazardous substances, complaints submitted by federal prison inmates, Animal Welfare Act inspection reports and more.

Since 2015, Jeremy has also published Data Is Plural, which highlights freely available datasets of public interest.

Jeremy grew up in Berkeley, Calif., and got his start in journalism as a staff photographer for his high school paper, The Berkeley High Jacket.

At The Times, Jeremy will lead a team of data journalists tasked with collaborating with journalists throughout the newsroom. They'll look for opportunities to use data analysis, computer automation and statistical thinking to invigorate and inform our coverage across a variety of beats. The team will partner with desks at all stages of reporting - helping to find, refine, contextualize and reinforce stories large and small.

Jeremy will join us in mid-September.
