Wacky World Playground Construction Expected To Begin In 2025

Earlier this year, the City of Alpharetta announced that construction of Wacky World Playground and related amenities at Wills Park is now scheduled to begin in 2025. The adjusted timeline results from the city's decision to maximize taxpayer value and consolidate all planned Wills Park improvements into a single contract rather than tackling them as separate, smaller projects. The decision, made by the Alpharetta City Council on June 24, remains in effect.

The original $3.8 million bid for Wacky World Playground, an adjacent restroom facility, and other amenities will be set aside. Instead, city staff will create a new procurement package encompassing all Wills Park upgrades. The design for Wacky World Playground remains unchanged, staying true to the creative input provided by local children and students who participated in a series of input sessions.

"We're still all in on bringing Wacky World Next Generation to life," said Morgan Rodgers, Director of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Services. "Although we were hoping to get started sooner, the new timeline will help make sure the project runs more smoothly from start to finish-and help us save money along the way."

The Wacky World citizen's committee continues its efforts to raise $750,000 to fund additional playground features. To date, the community has contributed $518,254.80 toward the goal, thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors, and volunteers. The construction of a new and improved Wacky World is one of the projects funded by the $29.5 million Parks Bond that was approved by Alpharetta voters in November 2021.

"Every dollar raised helps make Wacky World even more exciting for our families," said Dana Davis, Wacky World Committee Member. "We're incredibly grateful for the continued support from our community, and the extended fundraising period gives us more time to reach our goals. It's a win-win for everyone in Alpharetta."
Wacky World will remain open to the public in the interim, and regular inspections will ensure the playground remains safe for all visitors.
