Sahin and Kehl draw sporting conclusions following Asia Tour

Finishing off with a win had a positive impact. That was clear to see from everyone involved following the 3-2 victory over Cerezo Osaka. Admittedly very exhausted but with a good result in the bag, the BVB contingent headed straight for the airport after the game and began their journey back to Germany.

Finishing off with a win had a positive impact. That was clear to see from everyone involved following the 3-2 victory over Cerezo Osaka. Admittedly very exhausted but with a good result in the bag, the BVB contingent headed straight for the airport after the game and began their journey back to Germany.

Head coach Nuri Sahin and sporting director Sebastian Kehl summarised the events and developments of the short stay in Thailand and Japan and looked ahead as well. We have summarised the most important statements from both of them below.

\n

...on the match in Osaka:
\n Sahin: \"It was a very good step forwards, a good reaction to the defeat in Thailand. The things that we discussed afterwards were taken on board. I'm extremely happy that we're flying home with such a positive result in the bag at the end of the first stage of pre-season. But what was even more important for me was to recognise the principles, to recognise the philosophy in the build-up play. It was already significantly better in terms of pressing too.\"

\n

Kehl: \"We took a step forwards today. That was clearly visible. But we also know that we still need to work on many, many things. We absolutely wanted to take home a win with us. It is quite a different feeling when you sit on the plane for a long time, you've won 3-2 and many, many things have worked really well.\"

\n

...on the sporting development during the trip:
\n Sahin: \"Of course, I could have done without the defeat in Thailand, but everyone also saw the circumstances, how it was and how the match went. I also got to know the lads in the team even better, also in my new role. We held a lot of talks and - apart from the result in Thailand - I can really only take away positives.\"

\n

Kehl: \"Overall, we're very satisfied with the trip. We knew that it would be a challenging time. But the two matches taught us a lot. The ones today were a lot more positive than the ones a few days ago, I think. We're very satisfied that no players ultimately got injured and that we were able to see a few young players in action here and work on a few principles.\"

\n

...on the balancing act between sport and PR on the trip to Asia:
Kehl: \"We deliberately kept the trip compact, also in view of the training sessions and the temperatures in mind. That's simply part and parcel of it all when you travel abroad. The team did an outstanding job. I think that the trip was once again organised very well. The entire BVB team invested an unbelievably large amount of effort to structure everything in advance in such a way that it would be as pleasant as possible for the players. But of course, we predominantly want to train. We will step that up over the coming days. But nonetheless, Borussia Dortmund have left a very good impression here.\"

\n

Sahin on his first tour in the head coach role:
\n Sahin: \"I travelled a lot as a player - with Real, Liverpool and BVB. There it was stipulated: lunch at 13:00 CEST, training at 17:00 CEST, bed at 21:00 CEST. And you simply follow that plan. You have nothing to do with anything else. But now, of course, I was completely involved with the planning: factoring in the jetlag, postponing training and monitoring the lads. It was challenging when we would then sit there in the evenings and I would look into the eyes of my staff. Hats off to my coaching team for the job they did.\"

\n

Sahin on the non-sporting impressions from Asia:
\n Sahin: \"Asia is beautiful, Japan in particular is a dream country for me, especially the people. I've fallen in love with the country all over again. Really cool. Thailand was also beautiful too, we just unfortunately did not have any time to see anything of the surroundings.\"

\n

Kehl on the outlook for the upcoming weeks:
\n Kehl: \"You have to categorise the phases properly. The team was very much thrown together. Many young players were with the first team for the first time. Nonetheless, we of course tried to build up a certain team spirit and to use the time together. The boys had fun with each other, took part in a team event together, spent time together and had a lot of opportunities to talk about football too. A new period will begin from next week onwards, because then all of the internationals will join us. A very intensive next phase will start in Bad Ragaz, where some of those who have been there now will no longer be with us. But that's not a bad thing, but rather normal. Many will come away with a whole load of experiences. The competition for places will now be significantly stiffer among the established lads. That's what we need. There are still a few days to go, but the start of the season is no longer all that far away.\"
