Civil Rights Leader Set to Issue Warning that Vance's Invitation to Join Him and Trump at Army-Navy Game Is Clear Endorsement of Vigilantism
New York, NY (December 13, 2024) - Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), on Saturday will categorically condemn Vice President-elect JD Vance's invitation to Daniel Penny to join him at the Army-Navy football game this weekend days after he was acquitted for murdering Jordan Neely in a subway car. Rev. Sharpton's remarks during NAN's Saturday Action Rally at the House of Justice in Harlem come as the public continues to react to Penny's acquittal.
"While JD Vance and Donald Trump will cozy up with Daniel Penny and celebrate the fact that he killed a man in crisis, members of NAN will honor the life of Jordan Neely and condemn how he died," said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of NAN. "Let's call Vance's invitation what it really is: a pure endorsement of vigilantism - even if it leads to murder. I condemned these actions at Jordan's funeral last May and I will amplify that call at the House of Justice this weekend."
Members of NAN have supported Neely's family since Penny killed him on an F train in May 2023. Cellphone footage showed Neely experiencing a mental health crisis in a subway car, after which Penny put him in a chokehold. During his trial, Penny's Marine instructor testified he misused the technique in restraining Neely. Rev. Sharpton condemned Penny's decision to take action into his own hands while delivering Neely's eulogy in Harlem last spring. In addition to NAN covering funeral costs, members of the New York City chapter and Youth Huddle were present in the courtroom throughout Penny's trial.
