The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Police Department proudly participated in the annual Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run, which passed through their campus on Monday, June 3. This event, a staple for the SIUE PD for over 15 years, saw the addition of a Special Olympics athlete joining the officers, adding a special touch to the day. The Torch Run is not only a vital fundraising movement but also aims to raise awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois.

"I first would like to thank Kathleen Pont (telecommunicator supervisor) who spearheads this event for our department. Kathleen puts in a lot of time and effort to assist with Special Olympics," said Adam Severit , lieutenant with the SIUE PD. "Participating in this event is just a small gesture we are able to provide to show our support for this great cause. We had a wonderful day to be out there and we hope by participating in this event, we were able to get the word out to our community so others can show their support as well."

The Law Enforcement Torch Run stands as the single largest year-round fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Illinois. Its mission encompasses two primary goals: to generate funds and to heighten awareness for the athletes participating in Special Olympics Illinois. This annual intrastate relay is a testament to the dedication of approximately 3,000 officers, who carry the Flame of Hope across nearly 1,500 miles, touching thousands of communities throughout Illinois via 23 different legs. Their journey culminates in the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games in Normal.

The Torch Run is not just a single event; it encompasses a series of fundraising activities throughout the year. These include Polar Plunges, Dunkin' Cop on a Rooftop, Tip-A-Cop events, Truck Convoys, and Plane Pulls. Since its inception in 1986, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised over $70 million, significantly boosting awareness about the accomplishments of Special Olympics Illinois athletes.

Looking ahead, the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run has embraced the theme "TOGETHER WE CAN" for 2024, using #ILTorchRun24 on social media to inspire widespread participation and support.

The SIUE Police Department, along with their law enforcement colleagues across the state, is dedicated to making a significant impact through the Torch Run. Their commitment to supporting Special Olympics Illinois reflects a broader mission of community service and engagement, showcasing the powerful difference that united efforts can make in the lives of athletes and their families.
