BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Underscoring the importance of civic engagement, Bowling Green State University will hold the first TEDxBGSU: Democracy for the Public Good event, an independently organized speaker series, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Multipurpose Room of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
Fostering ideas worth spreading, the new event presented by the C. Raymond Marvin Center for Student Leadership and Civic Engagement at BGSU will feature six speakers from across the learning and greater community focused on the future of democracy and the importance of being involved.
Featured speakers and topics for TEDxBGSU: Democracy for the Public Good include:
- BGSU President Rodney K. Rogers - Higher education, public good and democracy
- Dr. Robert Alexander - Overcoming the polarization pandemic, one conversation at a time
- Dr. Amanda Anastasia - Democratizing humanity in the information age
- Abigail Burger - Starting small: The importance of civic engagement at the local level
- Rachel Gillum - Depolarizing America through critical thinking
- Tatum Proffitt - Convergency insufficiency: Depolarizing our political dialogue
Building on conversation and civil discourse, speakers from Thursday's event will join Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Wood County Board of Elections Director Terry Burton for a panel discussion focused on the future of American democracy at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, in Room 207 of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
Launched in 2009, TEDx is a program of locally organized events that bring the community together to share a TED-like experience. Some of the best talks from TEDx events have gone on to be featured on TED.com and garnered millions of views from audiences across the globe.
