Mexico Promotes Multilateralism and Fair, Inclusive, and Sustainable Development at UN Summit of the Future
  • UN adopts Pact for the Future, a roadmap for intergenerational justice and fair, inclusive, and sustainable development
  • Mexico advocates for gender equality, sustainable development models that eliminate privileges and shift away from extractivism, and a more representative and inclusive international financial architecture
  • World leaders unite on need to reinvigorate multilateral system to address current and emerging challenges

Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena participated today in the Summit of the Future at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The summit aimed to analyze the multilateral system and propose concrete actions to address the most pressing current and emerging international challenges.

The UN member states adopted the Pact for the Future and its two annexes: the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. These documents establish a roadmap for upholding the principle of intergenerational justice and mobilizing resources to promote fair, inclusive, and sustainable development.

In her plenary address, Foreign Secretary Bárcena stated, "This Summit is an opportunity to renew the international community's collective commitment to multilateralism-an essential tool for facing current challenges, but one that is facing growing skepticism. [...] Let's use this Summit to examine where we are today, critically assess our international framework, acknowledge the UN's legitimacy crisis and sow hope for the future."

"Multilateralism must overcome partial and nationalist visions. We must agree on means of implementation based on the principle of shared but differentiated responsibilities, overcoming inertias that normalize injustice and inequality," emphasized Secretary Bárcena.

The Foreign Secretary noted that, during the negotiations on the Pact, "Mexico fueled the Pact's ambition with concrete proposals. We advocated for accelerating progress towards gender equality, and rethinking development models to eliminate privileges and transition us from extractivism and environmental deterioration to sustainability. Additionally, we emphasized the urgent need for a more representative and inclusive international financial architecture."

Secretary Bárcena highlighted three key contributions of the Pact for the Future: the urgency of a nuclear-weapon-free world amidst high military tension; the critical need for development financing; and the need to reform multilateral governance, including the Security Council and the international financial architecture.

"Our solutions must be viable, timely, relevant and evidence-based," said the Secretary. "We must measure first and measure together; therefore, we must give the United Nations the mandate and the roadmap to measure and advance these agendas."

The Government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism as essential for achieving fair, inclusive, and sustainable development.
