Irvine, Calif. - UCI Health has become the first Southern California health system to offer advanced photon-counting computed tomography scanning, which features higher resolution scanning at a fraction of the time necessary for traditional CT imaging. The first patients were scanned on July 16 at the new Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building on the UCI Health ― Irvine medical campus.

"UCI Health cares for patients with complex conditions and state-of-the-art medical imaging is an essential part of this care," said Dr. Vahid Yaghmai, professor and chair of radiological sciences and interim chair of radiation oncology in the UC Irvine School of Medicine and UCI Health.

"With the installation of the first photon-counting CT technology in Southern California, our patients now have access to the most advanced CT imaging available in the world. This technology enables our radiologists to evaluate the body with very high-resolution images obtained in less than a second, compared to much longer studies performed with conventional scanners."

Advanced imaging at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is a key component of cancer diagnosis, treatment and active surveillance for those recovering from cancer. As the region's leading provider of complex care for cancer, neurosciences, digestive health, orthopaedics and more, UCI Health is committed to making the best technology accessible to its patients. Next month, UCI Health will open its new Outpatient Imaging Center at UCI Medical Center in Orange, providing the latest in imaging excellence to central and north Orange County residents.

UCI Health provides imaging and diagnostic services at UCI Medical Center, which is home to Orange County's only Level I trauma center and primary stroke center. Services are also available at UCI Health locations in Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Irvine, Newport Beach, Tustin and Yorba Linda.
