Leduc

In the evening of June 19, the Leduc RCMP received multiple reports of a suicidal male who was in possession of a firearm and had consumed alcohol and prescription pills. The location of the male was initially undetermined so resources from other RCMP detachments, as well as from the Edmonton Police Service, were used, including the Air 1 Helicopter and Tactical Team.

Police services located the male in his vehicle and set up containment around him. EPS Air 1 was above the location and captured the incident on video. The male was observed to be in possession of a firearm while inside of his vehicle. Phone communication was initiated between police and the male but proved unsuccessful in deescalating the situation. The male stepped out of the vehicle with the firearm and members of the EPS Tactical Team discharged their weapons resulting in the death of the male.

As part of its ongoing investigation, ASIRT is continuing efforts to identify people who may have witnessed aspects of the confrontation between the man and police. ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and may have witnessed these events, and/or may have video, to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.

ASIRT investigations will examine the use of force by the officers involved. No additional information will be released.

ASIRT's mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta's police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
