Senator Markey Statement After Senate Republicans Block Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act

Washington (August 1, 2024) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement on his vote in favor of the Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act.

"It is a no-brainer to support expansion of the child tax credit so that we can lift 500,000 children out of poverty and boost incomes to benefit 16 million children across the country, including 182,000 in Massachusetts," said Senator Markey. "Too many families are struggling to make ends meet, and this bill would be a lifeline, providing as much as $1,500 in the first year. The bill would also incentivize construction of more than 200,000 units of affordable housing across the country, including 5,000 in Massachusetts, and provide tax relief to communities hit by disasters. I had many concerns with the corporate tax break in this bill, but working families need a break right now.

"We have a moral obligation to ensure that families have the resources they need in order to take care of their children. But instead of prioritizing working families, Republicans demanded billions in corporate tax breaks in this package and then voted against it.

"I will continue the fight for an even more expansive child tax credit that reaches every child and allows working families to receive the full benefit they're entitled to. I believe we need to make permanent the child tax credit enacted under the American Rescue Plan, which cut child poverty in half.
