Elevator Safety Inspection in Preparation for Heavy Rain

- Preventing Breakdowns and Accidents Due to Heavy Rain… Distributing Handbooks, Visiting Sites

Hyundai Elevator is inspecting its elevator maintenance and management sites nationwide to prepare for the rainy season, including torrential rainfall.

The company has mobilized 16 branches and 50 centers that provide elevator maintenance and management services to conduct inspections and preventive activities for sites throughout the country (193,219 units). Beginning in June, the inspection focused on preventing flooding and leakages due to downpours and providing safety guidelines for responding.

The recent increase in breakdowns due to torrential rain and other summer rains caused by abnormal climate underlines the importance of elevator safety management as flood damage in buildings, including apartments and commercial buildings, can affect elevators. Safety management is part of an effort to prevent inconveniences experienced by residents, such as elevator failures, as reports of damage caused by flooding and leakages increased during the rainy season last year.

Hyundai Elevator distributed handbooks containing flooding and high-temperature prevention activities and response measures to customers from June ahead of the rainy season. The handbook included guidelines such as △Closing windows around the machine room and platform in case of rain, △Waterproofing on leak points in advance, △Keeping rooftop drains clean and installing guards when cleaning with water, △Shutting down power in case of building flooding, △Removing foreign substances from elevator doors frequently, △Checking ventilation and managing temperature in the machine room.

A Hyundai Elevator official said, "We are conducting preventive inspections as there are growing numbers of damages due to downpours. If malfunctions like short circuits or leakages occur due to heavy rain, do not attempt to operate the elevator arbitrarily. Turn off the power to the elevator immediately and report to the customer center or the maintenance company to take action."

Apart from the heavy rains, malfunctions and reduced component lifespans occur due to high temperatures from heat waves in summer. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent overheating by implementing ventilation and airflow measures to ensure the machine room temperature does not exceed 40℃. Hyundai Elevator also included elevator management methods for summer in its handbook for safe elevator operation.
