Zoo Awarded “Gold Standard” of Accreditation

For the 34th straight year, the Greenville Zoo earned accreditation through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the gold standard for institutions that provide world-class animal care and welfare. Less than 10% of zoos meet these rigorous standards.

"By visiting AZA-accredited facilities, visitors ensure they receive a wonderful educational experience in a safe environment where every animal they encounter receives the very best care," said Dan Ashe, AZA president and CEO.

City Councilor Dorothy Dowe expressed gratitude to the zoo staff for their work to maintain accreditation standards. "This recognition allows us to continue the important work of species conservation, while diligently caring for the zoo animals and providing a unique experience for all visitors," Dowe said.

Only 240 of the 2,800 zoos nationwide hold AZA accreditation. Certification requires a detailed application and multiple on-site inspections by an independent team of zoological professionals. The inspecting team analyzes all aspects of the facility's operation, including animal care and wellbeing; veterinary care; staff training; safety for visitors, staff and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; financial stability; risk management; governance; and guest services.

"There were very few questions from the accreditation commission and no major issues," Zoo administrator Bill Cooper said. "They were very complimentary in their report about our progress since the last accreditation inspection. The hearing could not have gone any better."
