Civil Rights Leader Reflects on Impactful Cycle that Saw a Black Woman Lead a Major Ticket for President of the United States for the First Time Ever

New York, NY (November 5, 2024) - Rev. Al Sharpton, the Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), today urged for election workers to be protected amid growing concerns over safety at polling sites. With voting underway across the nation, the civil rights leader reminded voters what is at stake in this pivotal election, capping off a marathon cycle that saw Vice President Kamala Harris become the first Black woman to become a major party nominee for President of United States.

"Democracy is on the ballot this election, but it is also under threat at poll sites across the nation. Many election workers are volunteers who give up their time to ensure people exercise their fundamental right to vote. They should not be pressured, intimidated, or attacked simply for doing their job. Protecting the integrity of our elections begins at poll sites across the nation.

What awaits us in the days and weeks ahead remains unclear. But the impact of this election will define our nation for generations to come. On one side, voters had the option of a lifelong public servant - a Black woman raised by a single mother, got her law degree from an HBCU, and brought a balance to public safety and police accountability. Not only did Vice President Kamala Harris make history as the first Black woman to lead a national ticket - she was perhaps one of the most qualified candidates ever to lead the free world. On the other side is Donald Trump - a man with 34 felony convictions, who never once spoke up against racial injustice, and wants to take us back to an era before the Civil Rights Act.

Americans will decide what future they want to provide their children and grandchildren. My hope is they select one that allows my grandson to grow up with more rights than I did. Time will tell, but until then we must keep the faith that joy cometh in the morning."
