Advocacy in Action: Unmatched Access to Policymakers in 2024

As a new administration and Congress get ready to take office next month, the MD|DC Credit Union Association remains committed to championing credit unions across our region. We're dedicated to providing you with unmatched access to the policymakers who shape our industry at the local, state, and federal levels.

"What sets us apart is the depth of our relationships with policymakers. Advocacy is about building long-standing, trusted partnerships with policymakers. These relationships ensure your voice resonates, your priorities are addressed, and your credit union is fully engaged in shaping the future of our industry."
- John Bratsakis, President/CEO, MD|DC Credit Union Association.

Highlights of Our 2024 Advocacy Efforts

This year, we offered numerous opportunities to engage with key policymakers, here are the highlights:

Legislative Engagement:

  • Discussed the critical role of credit unions in supporting consumers and communities with Maryland Governor Wes Moore at the State House in Annapolis.
  • Welcomed Rep. Steny Hoyer as the keynote speaker at our annual Advocacy Luncheon during the Governmental Affairs Conference.
  • Hosted an in-district meeting with Rep. David Trone at Point Breeze Credit Union in Hunt Valley.
  • Met with Sen. Chris Van Hollen on Capitol Hill, along with legislative aides to Sen. Ben Cardin, Reps. Jamie Raskin and Dutch Ruppersberger.
  • Regulatory Engagement:
  • Coordinated a roundtable with CFPB Director Rohit Chopra and credit union leaders at the bureau's headquarters.
  • Hosted a roundtable at our Columbia office with NCUA Board Member Tanya Otsuka, followed by a tour of APL Federal Credit Union.
  • Facilitated a visit by Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman to SkyPoint Federal Credit Union to learn about its innovative community-based programs and services.
  • Hosted Maryland Commissioner of Financial Regulation Tony Salazar as a speaker at our annual Maryland Legislative Reception.
  • Conducted town hall meetings with NCUA Regional Director John Kutchey to discuss cybersecurity best practices and prepare for 2024 exams.

By leveraging these opportunities, we have strengthened our advocacy efforts and positioned your credit union for continued success. We look forward to building upon these achievements and advocating for your interests in the coming year.
