October is National Fire Prevention Month

Buffalo, New York - In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, October 6-12, Mayor Byron W. Brown and the Buffalo Fire Department are opening five fire houses to the community. Each fire open house will feature various apparatus and equipment that are unique to that station. Firefighters will also conduct firehouse tours, demonstrate firefighting techniques and much more.

Mayor Brown said, "I want to thank the Buffalo Fire Department for opening their doors to our community once again, bringing the continued tradition of fire open houses into our neighborhoods during National Fire Prevention Week. These fire open houses are a great opportunity for residents to engage directly with their neighborhood firefighters, offering them a chance to connect, see fire apparatus and learn about fire safety and prevention, hands-only CPR and much more. I hope to see everyone there."

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you! ™" The goal of this year's campaign strives to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. According to statistics, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent).

Fire Commissioner William Renaldo said, "The bottom line is, smoke alarms save lives! As part of Fire Prevention Week, we want to encourage City residents to not only test their smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in October but test them every single month, making sure to replace any broken or expired alarms in their homes."

The fire open houses are open to the public and include opportunities for children to climb aboard a fire engine and ask any questions they might have for the firefighters who are serve and protect our community. Free smoke detectors, coloring books and safety tips will also be distributed.
