Florida PSC Promotes Readiness During September's National Preparedness Month

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is promoting readiness during National Preparedness Month (NPM). Observed each September, the goal of NPM is to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies.

"September is one of the most active months of hurricane season, so it's perfect timing for National Preparedness Month," said PSC Chairman Mike La Rosa. "NPM reminds us to stay vigilant and ensure your hurricane kit is well stocked and your emergency plan is current and effective. In Florida, storm preparation is always a necessity."

To assist with ongoing hurricane season preparation and emergency planning, the Florida PSC's website features many resources:

  • The PSC's "Hurricane House," in English and Spanish, includes 19 preparation tips for your home and family, from planning an evacuation route to dealing with downed power lines.
  • The PSC's "Florida Be Prepared" offers a checklist of ways to "be prepared" in the case of power outages and other utility service interruptions during extreme weather events.
  • Use the PSC's "A Guide to Utility Assistance in Florida" to find the contact information for your utility company.
  • For additional information on assistance, the PSC's "Where to Find Help in Florida" offers information about various social service agencies that can assist residents.

About NPM
National Preparedness Month is a public service campaign to educate families and communities on the importance of disaster mitigation, preparedness and response. The 2024 NPM theme focuses on why it's important for diverse communities, like Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, to prepare for disasters and build resilience before a disaster strikes.
