Career Services offering networking events, professional development opportunities for students during fall semester

Northwest Missouri State University Career Services is continuing to provide students with opportunities this fall to seek advice from professionals, practice interviewing skills and network with employers.

"Attending networking and career programs are a crucial step in building a successful future," Kristin Little, career services coordinator, said. "These events provide students with invaluable opportunities to connect with industry professionals, gain real-world insights and sharpen their skills. By participating, students not only enhance their career readiness but also open doors to potential internships, job offers and mentorships that can shape their professional journey."

In addition to events throughout the semester to help students prepare and learn more about career paths, Career Services provides students with résumé and cover letter help, assistance with job and internship searches, networking tips and interview preparation.

Learn more about upcoming Career Services resources and events below or visit Career Services between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday on the first floor of the Administration Building.

Career Day

Career Day is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. The event is a time for students to meet with a variety of employers and graduate school program representatives to discuss internship and full-time employment opportunities.

Students may attend at any point during the event and are encouraged to bring copies of their résumés to share with employers. There is no cost or registration.

Mock Interview Days

Mock Interview Days allow students to meet with real employers during 30-minute increments and receive feedback on their résumés and interview skills.

Career Services offers Mock Interview Days for specific academic majors to provide students with interview experiences closely related to their interests.

Fall Mock Interview dates are:

• Agricultural sciences: Thursday, Sept. 19
• Computer science and information systems undergraduate students: Thursday, Sept. 26
• Business: Wednesday, Oct. 23
• Health and natural sciences: Wednesday, Oct. 30
• Behavioral sciences: Wednesday, Oct. 30
• Education: Wednesday, Nov. 6
• Language, literature and writing: Tuesday, Nov. 12

Students should reserve an interview time by visiting the Career Services office or by registering online at this link. Mock interview spots are based on employer availability and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must submit a résumé to their interviewers at least one week before the event.

Meet the Pros

Career Services offers Meet The Pros events for various majors and career fields. The event is designed for students to build connections and ask questions of professionals in their fields of interest.

Upcoming Meet the Pros dates

• Language, literature and writing: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Tower View Dining Room
• Art: 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building
• Geographic information science: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in Room 117 of Valk Center

Career Closet

Career Services helps Northwest students dress for success by offering attire for all types of career fields at the Career Closet, which is in a new location this fall at the Support Services Building. It provides clothing and accessories to Northwest students at no cost.

Students may visit the Career Closet between 2 and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or make an appointment with Career Services to visit at other times.

Northwest's focus on profession-based learning

In addition to the multitude of resources offered through Career Services, Northwest places a high emphasis on profession-based learning to help graduates get a jumpstart on their careers.

Students have opportunities to build their résumés with experiences on campus in nearly every area of study, including the Horace Mann Laboratory School, National Public Radio affiliate KXCV, the R.T. Wright Farm, Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area or Knacktive, a student-driven integrated digital marketing communications agency. In conjunction with its emergency and disaster management program, Northwest organizes and hosts Missouri Hope, an annual mass casualty training exercise that attracts first responders and emergency workers from throughout the nation and provides hands-on training in preparation for a natural disaster.

Upon graduating from Northwest, 93 percent of Northwest bachelor's degree earners and 99 percent of master's degree earners secure employment or continue their education within six months of graduation, according to the most recent data.
